Sadly, the branch line from Totnes to Ashburton was truncated at Buckfastleigh by the construction of the new A38 dual carriage way. The station at Ashburton was designed by a student of I.K.Brunel and much remains today. The station building and trainshed remain as do the goods shed and engine shed.
Rebuilding the railway back to Ashburton will be a challenging but not impossible project. The ‘Friends of Ashburton Station’ have struggled for some time to make progress but too many railway enthusiasts believe Ashburton is a lost cause. The project has support from Devon County Council and local MP’s but the 'Friends' have faced strong opposition from ‘greenies’ who would immediately abolish every steam railway in existence if they had their way.
The proposed rebuilding would be carbon neutral. Please give the Friends of Ashburton Station your support. The line can be rebuilt with enough support.
